If you’re a fan of horse racing, then you’ve probably heard the term “exotic bets.” But what do they entail? In this post, we’ll break down everything you need to know about exotic bets, whether you’re a seasoned pro or just getting started with horse racing.

What Are Exotic Bets in Horse Racing?

There are two main types of bets in horse racing — single-horse bets, such as win or place, and exotic bets. An exotic bet is a type of wager where you can mix and match horses to create your betting odds. You select which horses you think will place and in what order — the type of exotic bet you place depends on how many places you want to bank on.

Exotic bets are popular, but high-risk, high-reward — it’s very challenging to get all your predictions correct, but if you do you can see a large payout. Let’s take a closer look at the three main types of exotic bets you’ll find at the racetrack:

Exacta

Your Bet: Two horses will place 1st and 2nd in the exact order you pick.

Difficulty: Hard

An exacta bet is a bet in horse racing in which the bettor attempts to pick the first and second-place horses in order. This type of bet can be made at most racetracks worldwide and is the easiest of the exotic bets to calculate odds for, making it a popular choice for race fans. With careful handicapping, an astute fan can increase profits betting on Exactas. The payout for an exacta varies depending on the odds for that particular race, but will usually pay out more than a simple win or place bet on a single horse.

Trifecta

Your Bet: Three horses will place 1st, 2nd and 3rd in the exact order you pick.

Difficulty: Very Hard

A step up from the exacta, trifecta bets offer the bettor an opportunity to put their money on three horses in one race. A trifecta requires you to pick which horse will finish first, second and third place, in order from left to right. The odds against winning this bet are high, so you should only play when confident about your selections and after thoroughly researching your horses.

Superfecta

Your Bet: Four horses will place 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th in the exact order you pick.

Difficulty: Extremely Hard

Superfectas have you place a bet on four horses to finish first, second, third and fourth in order. It’s one of the most challenging bets you can make, but with the odds stacked so heavily against you, it has the potential to offer huge payouts. A successful superfecta requires highly skilled handicapping and a hefty dose of luck.
